JULIO is told to smile, work hard on the farm fields by day and pay a dime a dance into the night away despite facing discrimination along the way. Over 30,000 Filipino American farm workers, were used to counter the laziness, of whites and other ethnic groups. So Filipinos like JULIO, called the Manongs, "retired" them.Julio continues to spend money dancing with Joy bringing mounting tensions among local natives. Big Country Townsman challenges Julio to a dancing duel competition.Julio practices his fine dance steps to be the nights best during the towns outside riots at the Manila dance hall.
