It is 1790, and 11 year old Irish girl Molly O'Hanlon's father has been sentenced to 14 years transportation. He will be sent, as a convict, to New South Wales, a six month boat journey away. Molly and her mother decide to travel to New South Wales as well. Molly is convinced her father has been set up and will stop at nothing to set him free. None of them know that the ship they will travel on, The Neptune, will be a nightmare. Based on the true story of The Neptune and its most famous passenger, D'Arcy Wentworth, The Molly O'Hanlon Adventures blend fact with fiction to create an adventure for young and old. D'Arcy Wentworth was the first paying passenger to come to Australia, after a history of highway robbery, gambling, and marrying Jane Austen!!! Yes, the Jane Austen! They were each other's greatest love, the marriage broken up by Jane's family once they learned of D'Arcy's criminal background. Neither of them married again, and perhaps the names Mr D'Arcy and Captain Wentworth ring a bell? Once in Australia, D'Arcy led an amazing life, rising up to become, among other things, the Chief of Police to stop highway robbery, an occupation he himself had in London. Molly O'Hanlon is a fictional character who D'Arcy takes under his wing after (and before) both her parents die on The Neptune. Deaths such as these were a common occurrence, the Second Fleet was privatized, meaning finances were of the utmost importance. Knowing that food could be sold on arrival in the new land, Captain Donald Trail barely fed the convicts, as well as holding them in horrific conditions. This led to hundreds of convicts dying on the journey to Australia, from scurvy, infections, and worse. Molly is brave, determined, impulsive, and loves her parents more than anything in the world. This leads her into all sorts of amazing situations. From storms at sea to floggings to dinners with princes and governors to thievery and skullduggery, The Molly O'Hanlon Adventures: Mystery on the High Seas has it all.
