Running Dead

Two men are executed in a swish London Hotel. Ten years earlier they were victims of a financial fraud, committed by a Paul Connolly. Scotland Yard's Detective Inspector Jim McClure, who headed the earlier fraud investigation, is now handling the murder case. To help out, he seconds Commander Ash Todd from the Australian Federal Police. Todd, as a young cop with the Queensland Police, had assisted in the conviction of Connolly.Todd travels to London, and with McClure's blessing, sets out to find Connolly who is now in the south of France. Information prised from Connolly sends Todd to the Cayman Islands and New Jersey. With help from the NYPD Todd finds evidence pointing to one person, Ernesto Alvarez. Todd knows Alvarez has a fearsome reputation ? and Connolly was one of his operatives.After escaping an attack, Todd heads back to London, determined to nail both Connolly and Alvarez. He puts his evidence to McClure, but The Yard seems to have gone cold on the case. Todd is bewildered at the sudden lack of interest. He is also constantly bewildered by the lack of response from his partner, Sally, who never answers his calls.Todd enlists the help of McClure's offsider Sergeant Shepherd. He moves in to the Landmark Hotel where the murder took place, and a young duty manager contacts him with CCTV footage of strange activity surrounding the hotel safe. With an off-duty Sgt Shepherd helping, he conducts a raid on an Alvarez shopfront. Caught on the shop CCTV tape, is Inspector McClure, who is none too interested in the new evidence, but arranges a meeting with Alvarez. At the meeting Todd accuses Alvarez. Under fire from Alvarez' associates both McClure and Cindy are killed. In the process he discovers Cindy was Alvarez' daughter. As Todd readies for the arrest, Alvarez quietly steps off the penthouse balcony.Todd returns to Sydney, back to Sally. And there he discovers what was keeping her at a distance. Sally knew it would only distract him, so she held off the news - Todd was going to be father.
