Brownie is an unusual chook, who dances, sings, tries to fly over the fence and yearns for adventure. After escaping the farm on the axle of a car, she settles in with the Fowler family, bonding with Shelley and Kelly, who seems able to interpret her buk-b-deeeerrrk noises. Because of her courageous willingness to defy convention, a smart-mouthed but caring crow, Dave, follows her, adopting her as his hero, despite her protestations that she will fail him.Her unusual antics are filmed and uploaded to social media, where she gains a huge following, achieves fame, is invited onto talk shows, and records TV advertisements and a movie. Then disaster strikes. Rumours that Brownie is a composite of several chooks are supported by unattractive photos of her moulting. Her changed appearance and media criticism upset her and the Fowlers. Brownie realises that she will continue to cause her family distress by staying or leaving. As she shares her angst with Dave, she realises that he has become her hero through his loyalty, friendship and counsel. She decides to leave.Because she has lost her celebrity appeal, and her agent, Alldermunny, will benefit from an insurance payout if she dies, he pursues her to see her dead, while her family pursue her to get her home safely. Her adventurous travels end with a road accident. In a climactic scene, she escapes Alldermunny by flying as never before, with Dave's help; but when Dave is injured, Brownie must help him. In a reflective moment, she realises that she wants to return to the farm. There, she settles down contentedly with a brood of chicks. That is, until she sees a newspaper promoting shuttle flights to the moon. Her sense of adventure is stirred, but she's not ready to travel again. Or is she?
