First Book For New Readers contains more than 60 full color photographs. Each photo is accompanied with a multiple level very short story. The first section (1 or 2 sentences) of each story is written on the preschool level. The second section is on the primary(Kindergarten - first grade) level. The third section is on the elementary(beyond first grade) level. The adult can start reading to the child as early as desired. The young learner can be taught and encouraged to read whenever the adult feels (s)he is ready. The text levels (designated as: 1, 2, and 3) do not correspond to age levels. Nor do they correspond to grade levels. Each child starts out on his or her own level and gradually advances. The adult reader of this book will be able to tell when he is ready ready for the next level. The vocabulary used in the FWFNR is a combination of "sight words" and words that the child will be able to "decode" at some point. The repetition within FWFNR has been placed there to re-enforce that which is being learned. Sight words occur very frequently in materials printed in the English language. For this reason, it is necessary to recognize them immediately upon seeing them. Otherwise, it would be very difficult to achieve reading literacy. Learning these words within the context of a story makes it much easier and more pleasant to learn than rote memorization. Words which are not sight words have to be decoded or "figured out" by the child. This is done after the alphabet is learned and the child is able to link the letters and combinations of letters to their sounds and meanings. Of course, the more practice she gets, the more proficient he will become with learning. The intent of this book is to promote your having pleasant and productive reading time with your child.
