I was born on the island of Bermuda and separated from my home and family at a young age due to personal challenges that my mother was having. These challenges made raising me a task that was too demanding for her. I was sent to live with my paternal grandmother and her husband in Ohio at the age of ten. Throughout my childhood I endured physical and sexual abuse, the loss of my baby brother and a strained relationship with my father. It wasn't until my early thirties that I became ready to allow God to begin my healing process. Due to the hurt, anger and loss of trust I had in others, I grew very short and callous in some areas of my life. There was a little girl in me crying to be healed and a heart that wanted to love but didn't know how to. The poems in this book are a collection of thoughts and emotions of hurt, pain, loss, realization and growth. The love of God was able to break through the walls that I had spent all my life building up. I thought that these walls would protect me but instead they kept me imprisoned to a life of self-inflicted pain, isolation and depression.
