Gene "Kentuck" Oberst: Olympian, All-American, Notre Dame Football Champion (Gene Oberst)

During the golden age of the 1920s, historical innovations and accomplishments were constantly being made in art, music, and sports. Enter Gene Oberst. Born at the beginning of the twentieth century with a disability, it took a haphazard event involving a stray javelin to make the entire world, and Oberst himself, realize he was more than a bookworm-he was a natural-born athlete. As he grew up in a Twain-like town on the Ohio River, the ideals of his self-sufficient family and their dedication to educate themselves fed Gene's persistent and diligent nature, permeating every area of his life. That determination led him to play college football for a national championship Notre Dame team under legendary coach Knute Rockne. He went on to the highest achievement for athletes-the Olympics. Including information taken directly from Gene's personal journals, this biography offers a firsthand, behind-the-scenes look at one of the most persistent and innovative athletes of the 1900s. Covering the journeys Gene's ancestors took during their emigration to America from Germany, to Gene's time journeying to the Paris Olympics, follow the story of the miraculous and obstacle-defying life of American Olympian Gene Oberst.
