In 1760Seven-year-old Nyira lives in a village in the African Congo. Ten-year-old Enriquillo lives in a giant cave in the Saint Domingue (Haiti) jungleWhen Nyira?s village is attacked by slavers, she escapes into the jungle. She is befriended by a young gorilla named, Gord. When Gord?s mother is killed by a leopard, Nyira helps him track the beast and take his revenge in a vicious battle. When Nyira leaves her injured friend to go find herbs to heal his wounds, the gorilla is captured by the slavers. She exchanges her freedom for Gord?s life. She is transported by slave ship to Saint Domingue (Haiti).Enriquillo?s people are the Taino, who greeted Columbus and the Castilians in 1492. But once the Spanish genocide of the natives began, a small group hid in the mountains and in the giant mother cave. There they resided for over two hundred and fifty years. Enriquillo is the only member of his tribe with invisibility, so he does a lot of the day hunting and night fishing. But when a gathering of all the remaining tribes is planned, Enriquillo?s best friend offers to go with him to secure a larger catch of fish. When his friend is killed by a heart-less French planter, who spied the native boys hunting on the beach at the edge of his property, Enriquillo is set on a path for revenge. He meets Nyira when he sneaks into the town market one day, and realizes she is the dark princess prophesized as his future. But event?s take a horrible turn, when Nyira heals a friend after a terrible accident and is condemned to burn as a witch. Enriquillo must risk his people?s secret existence to outwit the dangerous French troops and the determined archdeacon, to save his love.
