The narrative is based on close to 200 family letters and documents. It is a family saga full of hardship, endurance, joys and sorrows. Interwoven with the history of westward expansion, of German emigration, and of Kansas, the story chronicles, through the pens of ordinary people, an intimate view of the sweep of American history from the 1850s to the nominal end of the frontier in 1890--
