This is first English account of the diplomatic visit of Afghan Prince Nasr Allah to England in the late nineteenth century. Using both British and Afghan sources and placing the visit in its international and historical context McChesney analyses the agency, motivation and perceptions of the prince towards his hosts and vice versa, including the resistance of the smaller party. He reveals for example that while privately impressed by Britain's military prowess Nasr Allah instructed his colleagues to remain impassive in a successful attempt to frustrate the British.
