An ice storm comes during the night, and its winds plaster the snow figure with leaves which are affixed by the ice covering it, and which happen to give it the appearance of having a funny face and a beautiful dress. Eventually it melts but leaves a patch of wild violets and fond memories behind. A tradition starts with the making of snow persons decorated with colorful leaves (sometimes preserved with wax), and the book ends with the two little girls, now grown, showing their children how to decorate a snow person with leaves, as the cycle of life is completed.
