The impetus for this volume came when the Arthur JefferyCentre for the Study of Islam was given some of the writings ofAubrey Whitehouse. Whitehouse was a former lecturer in Islam atthe college, now the Melbourne School of Theology, from whichhe graduated in 1935. Following his graduation, he went to Egyptwhere he immersed himself in the study of Arabic and Islam.Growing out of his experience, he wrote an introductory course tothe study of Arabic which included cassettes. While in Egypt, hewrote various pamphlets explaining the Christian position inrelation to questions and objections posed by the Muslims withwhom he and his fellow workers interacted. Not surprisingly, healso wrote an Introduction to the Study of Islam which was producedin a teach-yourself, question-and-answer format. To assist others,he also wrote a small pamphlet entitled What the Qur'an teaches.
