It is not sufficient to have leadership skills today; leaders must also show up with feeling. They must learn to create relationships beyond "leader and follower" that promote individual performance and the purpose and well-being of the organization. None of the rising, human-centered, "whole person" well-being initiatives are out of left field. On the contrary, they are long overdue, as being one-hundred percent human has always been the state of nature for organizational leaders and each person on their teams. The "old school" leaders who might still view their guiding principle as "my way or the highway" will be challenged on many fronts. Leaders today must integrate greater empathy in their leadership approaches. For many, this would create discomfort no matter the external environment. The context of an ever-accelerating rate of change in a dynamic and often disruptive environment makes the challenge more daunting. In many-if not most-organizations, speed is not required, but getting started is imperative. The individuals most valued and sought by organizations today understand that working with approachable and enlightened leaders is no longer a mere hope. They will be aware that there are many firms where they can spend their energy and creative abilities feeling valued and appreciated. They will find organizations with leaders who embrace the human factor as an advantage, not a burden. The best leaders will work to develop the "soft skills" that coaches and mentors have utilized for decades. The leaders who commit to accepting this shift in expectations for the workplace and bring consciousness to the development of new attitudes and skills will have a leg up in attracting and retaining the best available talent.
