First published in 1889, Three Men in a Boat is the classic tale of three friends - Jerome, Harris, and George (and the dog Montmorency) - who plan a trip rowing up the River Thames from London to Oxford for a health-restoring vacation in the great outdoors. These three martyrs to hypochondria and general languor cannot begin to anticipate the challenges that lie ahead for them, not the least of which is each other's company. Everything that could go wrong, does, in this delightful and very funny expedition through England's past and its Victorian present. Blake Heathcote's stage adaptation for five actors is a comedic confection: fun, light, and wonderfully theatrical. It premiered in Canada in 1989 and has been produced on many stages, including an enthusiastically received production directed by playwright Alan Ayckbourn's at his Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round in North Yorkshire, UK.
