In the fall of 1963, high school sweethearts Tilly and Elmer from South Branch, Iowa, tearfully depart for contrasting colleges in San Francisco and Cedar Falls. There they enjoy wildly divergent experiences, including adventures with a menagerie of new lovers. On their distant campuses, they encounter quite different attitudes about everything from sexual propriety and the Vietnam war to the pleasures of small towns vs. large cities. Miscommunication, exaggerated news reporting, and immersion in different college cultures cause mounting misunderstandings between them. Over time, these misunderstandings turn their love to contempt, and the former lovers unceremoniously lose touch with each other.After graduation, however, as they prepare to enter the adult world, they unexpectedly find themselves imprisoned together in the confines of a 1962 Chevy pickup on a troublesome road trip across America.
