Faymia is a former slave who decides to visit the village of her birth with her young friend, Maren. When she arrives, she finds that the village has been fractured, forming two tribes that are at war with each other. When she discovers that the tribal scouts are conspiring together to stoke the flames of war, she is thrown in prison to be executed. Meanwhile, her husband and his ward catch wind of her predicament and race across Aun to help her. Along the way, they are delayed by natural dangers and an army of augmented warriors who aim to capture them. With the help of her young friend, Maren, she breaks free and races to inform the two tribal chiefs. But convincing them that they are being manipulated by their own scouts proves difficult, and she must do battle to keep the entire village from being destroyed.
