In the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, we read brief snippets of the early life of Jesus and the actions of His parents Joseph and Mary. These stories are proclaimed during the Advent/Christmas season each year from the Pulpit and have become very familiar to all, Christian and non-Christian alike. It may come as a surprise to the modern reader that much more detail is available to anyone who wishes to take the time to do some digging. These details are the conclusions that were reached by men and women as they meditated on the Nativity narratives in the Bible and also on the oral tradition that was passed on and debated early in the history of the Church. Who are these men and women? Men like St. Irenaeus who was the second Bishop of Lyons and lived between A.D. 140 and A.D. 202, St. Athanasius, who became Bishop of Alexandria in 328 A.D. , St. John Chrysostom, A.D. 344/345 - A.D. 407, St. Jerome, A.D. 347 - 419/420 A.D. , St. Augustine A.D. 354 - A.D. 430. These Fathers of the Church and others have offered their insight into the lives of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Their conclusions provide background and a fleshing out of the details that are worthy of consideration when meditating on the Christmas Narrative. These details are presented in the form of diary entries that Joseph and Mary could have made while they lived the events that have eternally impacted our lives.
