As they all work to find the mysterious treasure--the vicomte gives them hints, but never actually tells them what it is--Ned is the one who finally figures out the secret hiding place, after realizing that the unusual brooch Marguerite inherited from her mother is a clue. Despite a journey complicated by madness and attempted murder, the lovers succeed in reaching their happy ending.
