The story of a failed Civil War era American colony of Free born People of Color told thru the eyes of 16 year old Miri. Denied the right to enlist and encouraged to emigrate to Haiti by President Lincoln, the colonists endure numerous hardships and nearly everyone perishes in an epidemic.With the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln permits recruitment of Colored soldiers and Miri's father leaves the family in Haiti to enlist. Miri becomes the main provider for her mother and brother and meets the challenge through determination and resourcefulness. After the war ends, she finances their return to the United States, and returns home, a mature, young woman.
