Through years of observation and discussion with pastors and ministry leaders, I concluded that there was something fundamentally wrong. There is a lack of depth in Christianity. I see pastors struggle and churches fade. My response is to invest in the leaders themselves more than their churches. I make the case for spiritual growth through the disciplines. In some places, real progress is made. I have seen the value in working with fellow disciples. For years, I have invested in as many leaders as possible, urging them to grow deep in Christ. For years, we used the word discipleship without really knowing what we meant. From these experiences emerged the vision for this project that seeks to explore some important questions. These question stem from the assertion of church leaders that there is a lack of discipleship in the church. What is this widely used word 'discipleship?' How does it differ from disciple making? What does Scripture teach us? What can history teach us? What may we learn from Jesus and His disciples? Why did disciple making exist so sacrificially, and then appear to fade? Why is it largely missing today and what can be done to correct the problem? Leaders of smaller congregations want a concise model for disciple making, where is it? This project culminates by proposing a simple, adaptable, duplicatable model of congregational based disciple making.
