An Instant Nhl Star: The "Elias Effect"

On June 19, 2019 at the 2019 NHL Awards ceremony, Elias Pettersson of the Vancouver Canucks won the Calder Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year.The 20-year-old Swedish hockey player finished his inaugural NHL season, setting a Vancouver rookie record with 66 points (28 goals, 38 assists) in 71 games, surpassing Hall of Famer Pavel Bure (1991-92) and Ivan Hlinka (1981-82), who each garnered 60 points in their own excellent Canuck rookie years. The sublime Swedish rookie also set another Vancouver Canucks rookie record - with seven game-winning goals.In addition, Elias Pettersson led all NHL rookies in first (primary) assists (with 24), and in power-play goals (with 10). His shooting percentage of 19.4 % ranked seventh among NHL players (among those scoring at least 15 regular season goals). Finally, Pettersson drew 30 minor penalties in 71 games - the most on the team.He's the second Vancouver Canucks rookie to win the Calder Trophy (Pavel Bure won it in equally-sensational style in the 1991-92 season). At the end of each regular NHL season, the rookie of the year is voted on by members of the prestigious "Professional Hockey Writers' Association."Yet the new superstar does not see himself as a superstar - such is his inherent humility. Elias Pettersson simply sees himself as a regular (albeit talented) kid playing hockey and living out his NHL dream in North America. His only goal is to grow as a hockey player.Barring catastrophic injury, that'll be a given, along with taxes, death and opposite opinions in politics.
