When I was in college I had a professor who encouraged his students to ignore the preface and introduction when picking up a book for the first time. He believed that a text should be allowed to speak for itself. Nevertheless, he would always conclude his remarks by reminding us that we should read the introductory matter immediately afterwards, as the first critique of the work. This preface is written with that type of reader in mind as an unabashed apology for my poetry.The seasoned reader of contemporary poetry will find the mere presence of a preface in this book peculiar. Most poetry books of this size wouldn't dare to include one, letting art stand on its own. However, a student of the English poetry cannot avoid associating any preface to a book of poems with the preface to a book of poems, viz William Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballads.
