In some eastern traditions, Kali - in this case a demon, not the goddess Kali - is responsible for the age of vice and suffering that beset the world some millennia ago, and through which we still struggle today. Hence, the "age of darkness," or the Kali Yuga. The chief gardener from the golden times recounts the ways of old, when he was unconfined by a sheath of skin, before the veils fell and brought separation and darkness into the world. He tells of his exit from the homeland, his fall into the Kali Yuga, and the stunning discoveries he makes, shared by companions he could never have imagined, not even in the garden of his dreams. Cecily Birdbeak says, "A knockout. I loved it. Thought-provoking, well-crafted story with compelling characters who open a new window on traditional creation stories..."
