The chase leads her into the hands of a particularly obnoxious band of captors: high tech-wielding masters who don't like her any more than she likes Them. Or do They? Their mix of cruel and kind methods is confusing, and Their real purpose is impossible to know. What's clear is that They want to show Merrit exactly how and why Their sky-high tech makes them "essential to survival and the end of everything worth living for."
