This is the story of a dog who was abused by her owners before finding a loving home with an old man who has lived on his own for many years. The two characters find to their mutual astonishment that they can talk to each other. They meet a cantankerous parrot who decides to make his home with them. Their adventures together take on an unexpected twist when they encounter the evil ghost of a 16th century Earl. Fortunately, they find a magic sword which helps them to defeat the forces of evil, past and present. During the course of the story the old man, with the help of his animals, finds many new friends and the dog finds love when she nurses a vagrant dog back to life. The story concludes when the treasure they discovered is sold to the British Museum. The proceeds buy land which is used to establish an animal sanctuary.
