The plot involves two geneticists who have built a lucrative practice providing genetic services to individuals and families that are not available anywhere else in the world. Based on their brilliance as researchers and their willingness to forego ethical constraints placed on their colleagues, their capabilities to diagnose and correct genetic abnormalities have far surpassed the know state of the art. Almost out of curiosity they begin the first detailed examination of the DNA of Egyptian mummies. They identify a number of distinct DNA difference not found in modern man. These difference only appear to occur in a few of the more powerful and successful pharaohs and not the general population of that time. The two begin an extensive and unsuccessful study of all of the physical and medical data available to determine what characteristics might be associated with these genetic differences. For the senior partner (Dr. Stanton), it becomes almost an obsession to solve this genetic riddle. He concludes the only way to obtain the prerequisite information is with a living subject. Without the knowledge of his younger associate (Dr. Westgate)or anyone else, he begins the process to clone the Pharaoh Chepherin. He implants the cloned egg in the wife of a desperate young couple that has come to him for help in conceiving a child . For several years the child Alex)produced by his deception is put through rigorous test to identify and physiological change associated with the pharonic DNA. As thee young Pharaoh becomes an adult, he bigs to develop unusal powers. Conflicts arise between Dr. Stanton and Alex that results in a life or death race across Egypt to reach a tomb whose contents could save Dr. Stanton's life or provide Alex with almost unlimited power. The confrontation ends with tragic consequences
