Following a near collision with a large comet, Earth has undergone many changes. Mankind's survival appears problematical. Animals and humans born after the catastrophe are mutants. Bradley, Joel, Caroline, and the twins Betty and Bertha are the human mutants at the remains of an astronomical complex. Their additional brain functions emerge as they mature. Of necessity they become secretive, as some of their 'powers' are dangerous and could be lethal. Bradley emerges as leader. The group moves to The Lake a stark contrast to life at the Complex. The Lake's policeman discovers there are some crimes that need detective powers greater than he possesses. After some puzzling murders, he forms an unlikely alliance with Bradley and solves the murders in an unorthodox way with surprising results. 'In the Cold Light of Tomorrow' is not about disasters. It is about people, societies, evolution, mystery, crime and punishment.
