In the medieval era, monks found a way to speed up learning chant by replacing one of the four black lines of their music staff with a green or red ink line. This simple change eliminated something that was a major "Where's Waldo?" for monks and nuns as they no longer had to struggled to find and remember which line DO or FA was on.
