Breaking Through Darkness is a fictional story that is based on true events. While it is a disturbing story to comprehend, it is a triumphant one. It begins with Jennifer's life as a gravely neglected child and what she experienced everyday - physical, emotional, even sexual abuse at the hand of family and an alcoholic mother's friend. Screaming about it only made things worse for Jennifer and when she was as quiet as a mouse, it didn't matter either. Whatever she did and no matter how hard she tried to do the right things, she was always told that she was wrong. Dead wrong. As a young adult, Jennifer's life manifests itself through deep feelings of despair and helplessness including some high-risk behaviors. Her self-imposed isolation and inability to trust anyone ultimately translates into life-altering consequences of low self-esteem, hopelessness and serious relationship difficulties. Feeling worthless, ashamed, and alone, she decides that the only way to escape her miserable life is to end it.
