Cotton Harvest

Sally Carson is the main character in Cotton Harvest, a realistic middle grade novel set in the Arkansas delta in the early 1960s. Sally and her family, fresh from modern life in a northern industrial city, must spend the autumn picking cotton and living in the middle of cotton farming country. Conflict arises as they share an old run-down farmhouse with two other families. Sally locks horns with hateful, lazy Jackie Davis, who takes pleasure in antagonizing her. But the girls' common affection for a neglected and abused young boy eventually forms the basis for an unexpected friendship.
