It's a period of change and progress as well, as the story introduces its characters to the new steam threshing machines, telegraph, and railroad. Supported in theme by the Bible's books of Ruth and Job, it is also a story of Christian love and faith, paralleling not only Naomi's story but also that of the Swedish immigrant hired girl, Birgitta. In both, the strength of family ties and loyalty provides a reassuring pathway through the story's well-written narrative to it's final shocking conclusion.
