Angelica has a 150-pound Newfoundland dog named Bear that she loves dearly. But Bear is getting old and has trouble standing up and going outside to do his business. He barks, and Angelica helps him by putting a lifting arm under his body. "Angelica, when you go back to school this fall," says her mother, "there will be no one home to help, and Bear will start peeing in the house. So Bear will have to be put to sleep." Angelica starts to cry. "You mean kill him, don't you?" Then her mother starts to cry. "I am so sorry Angelica. I love Bear too!" Angelica goes over to Bear. She picks up one of his huge paws and looks into his big brown eyes. "Bear, I promise that I will try to make sure that you are not put to sleep just because you have trouble going outside to pee. Even if I have to fight gravity, I will invent some sort of device that helps you."
