Intellectually gifted, Andreas' life changed dramatically when he was given a scholarship to a school in the far off city of Stavanger. At 19, this young islander already holding a master's degree, boarded a steamship for America. He fulfilled his mother's long held dream when he enrolled as a pastoral student at Augsburg Seminary in Minneapolis. The joy of his first love was overshadowed with family tragedies as the years passed. Professor Helland was always "Papa" to his 7 children. In time, they gifted their own families with his grace-filled, courageous ideals.
