From Relationship To Covenant: A Journey Into The Promises Of God

Where are all of the promises of God in the Church today? Where is His presence? Who is experiencing the deeper things of the Spirit? We long for more. We cry out. We pray for revival. Why do the heavens seem locked? Has God failed on his promises? Or have we missed something? Of course the answer is not that God does not care. God longs to pour out his promises and presence just as much as we long to receive them. The problem is that the promises of God are covenant promises. They can only fall on covenant believers. Yet in recent years the Church has lost the meaning and practice of covenant. We live in an individualistic, logic-centered, event-focused culture that runs contrary to the relational minded culture of the Bible and turns the covenant of God into a contract of man. Covenant is not an event, it is a journey. It is not something we do as much as it is someone we become. Because we have lost understanding of covenant, we have lost the path that leads to covenant. This has led to a loss of covenant presence and promise. The good news is that God's process of moving his people from initial relationship to maturity of covenant is revealed in the biblical covenants of Abraham, Israel, and the disciples. Once the people of God understand this process, and follow it, they will unlock the promises of God in their lives.
