School counselors are being held more accountable for the academic achievement of students. Counselors are being bombarded with work that is not student centered, and they are facing challenges to balance the numerous roles they are expected to fulfill. Schools that have more than one counselor have the capability to utilize them for what they are intended to do, which is to help teachers to help students to achieve academically. The American School Counselors Association developed two models that counselors can use to help students to achieve academically: the comprehensive school counseling program and the student success skills model. This essay is a discussion of the importance of these two models and their role in student support programs.
