Sailing from Brooklyn: a Memoir

Sailing from Brooklyn presents the adventures and misadventures of novice, urban sailors, Bill Browning and his wife, Ilene. When Bill suggested that they buy a sailboat, she replied: "Jews don't sail." Noah notwithstanding they set a course buying a 29-foot Canadian built sloop, outfitting it and mooring it in Brooklyn's Sheepshead Bay. Their adventures began almost immediately. They loved their boat and the places it could take them. Their sailing skills grew as they ventured further from their Brooklyn mooring. They dropped anchor all around Long Island and along the coast of Connecticut and Rhode Island. At one in the morning, entering Fire Island Inlet the boat was knocked down by a wave breaking over their heads. Twice, Bill sailed solo around Long Island. Throughout their adventures he kept comprehensive logbooks detailing their experiences. Those logs are the basis for the book. Adventures need not occur far from home, you just need to leave the dock.
