From "2/5 of them got first or second places", we deduct the fractional part that first or second place winners are in, 2/5, from 1, to find the fractional part that third place winners are in: 1-2/5 =3/5 From "9/10 of them got second or third places", we deduct the fractional part that second or third place winners are in, 9/10, to find the fractional part that first place winners are in: 1- 9/10 =1/10 Now we know that third place winners are in the fractional part of 3/5 and that first place winners are in the fractional part of 1/10 so we deduct these two fractional parts from 1, to find the fractional part that second place winners are in: 1-3/5-1/10= 10/10-6/10-1/10=3/10 Second place winners are 3/10 of all the winners.
