Travel Notes: : Cumberland, Colchester and Pictou Counties of Nova Scotia

History serves as a link to our past, and some of these links are still readily observable today.in northern Nova Scotia. The area has long been rich in environmental industries which include farming, milling, fishing and lumbering. Many of these industries still continue to operate today; the same ones that were created many years ago by our previous generations. The majority of Cumberland, Colchester and Pictou Counties are rural and consist of dozens of small communities surrounding suburban areas of Amherst, Truro and Pictou. These small communities have remained prosperous throughout the past several centuries with many of the same families still present. Since these communities were once thriving, most of them previously included schoolhouses, churches and cemeteries. Although many of these historic venues are long gone, there remain many that now serve as historic reminders of our past. Although the history is not limited to the information gathered in these travel notes, it is important to recognize and honor the diverse history that is found here. Information pertaining to the history was assembled with the help of several key organizations. Some of those who assisted in the collection of the historic information include the Nova Scotia Archives and Records Management in Halifax, and several Historical Societies. This book is a compilation of information about places and things so that you can hold in your own hands a convenient compilation of what and wherefore to satisfy any curiosity. The author is a native son of Nova Scotia, born in Pictou who has traveled these byways on many occasions.
