Human beings have worshiped gods from the time cultures existed to explain natural phenomena that they didn't understand. Even with the great advances in scientific discoveries and technological developments, the vast majority of humanity remain glued to the religious paradigm based on fear and ancient superstitions. NED is a neural engineered droid from another world, whose civilization genetically engineered humans from apes. NED has been observing human evolution over the eons, and his report to his makers is overdue. It is possible the gods may think humans are too stupid for the species to continue without artificial evolution to prevent extinction.
