This book is the first of several volumes on Catholic labor priests in the United States during the 20th century, all written by Rev. Patrick J. Sullivan, C.S.C. Part of Pacem in Terris Press Series on Religion and Labor, this first volume documents the story of Catholic labor priests in the United States during the 20th Century. Identifying more than 400 of these labor priests, the book highlights the leading role of 5 "giants" in the U.S. Catholic bishops' Social Action Department: Msgr. John A. Ryan, priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis and professor at the Catholic University of America; Fr. Raymond McGowan, Kansas City Archdiocesan theologian-priest; Fr. John Hayes, Chicago Archdiocesan theologian-priest; Fr. George Higgins, Chicago Archdiocesan economist-priest; and Fr. John Cronin, Sulpician economist-priest. Future volumes are tentatively titled: LABOR PRIESTS AND THE UNIONS; LABOR PRIESTS, LABOR SCHOOLS, AND INSTITUTES OF INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS; LABOR PRIESTS ON ECONOMICS AND POLITICS; and LABOR PRIESTS' VIGNETTES. The author, Fr. Sullivan, is himself a Catholic labor-priest, as well as a university professor, and a member of the Congregation of the Holy Cross. He holds a B.A. in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame, a M.A. in sociology from Fordham University, and a Ph.D. in sociology from the Catholic University of America. Father Sullivan has served as: Professor of Sociology and an administrator at Kings College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; Catholic liaison to the J.P. Stevens union organizing campaign; adjunct professor and associate director of the Higgins Labor Center at the University of Notre Dame; and executive director of the Catholic Labor Guild in the Archdiocese of Boston. He is a currently member of the Steering Committee of Catholic Scholars for Worker Justice. His earlier books include CATHOLIC CHURCH INVOLVEMENT IN LABOR-MANAGEMENT CONTROVERSIES: 1950-1980 and CATHOLIC INSTITUTIONS AND LABOR-MANAGEMENT RELATIONS: 1950-1980. He has also published articles in AMERICA, EMMANUEL, SOJOURNERS, and U.S. CATHOLIC.
