Sixteen-year-old Jacqueline "Jake" Maria Palomera is the lone survivor of a drug-related incident gone very wrong. After her mother and baby brother are killed in a gang shooting by mistake, she's sent from her California home to live with a cousin in Boise, Idaho, where she finds herself enrolled at the Boise Learning Unit for Exceptional Students (BLUES). There, Jake meets an extraordinary group of young geniuses whose boredom in traditional classrooms has driven them to find ingenious ways of stirring up trouble and making mischief. When Sheriff Nick Lash is assigned to BLUES as a reprimand for a questionable bust in Boise, he quickly realizes the potential of these brilliant malcontents. He and his partner soon get the idea to ask the students to create computer software that will help them solve a rash of car thefts taking place in southern Idaho. The students accept the challenge-but their success triggers a tragic sequence of events that leaves one student dead and leads Jake to a terrifying confrontation with the man who took everything from her.
