This book deals with the history of the Hurons in general and especially the change of identity, selfesteem and social organisation throughout the centuries. It consists of two main parts, the first part is an explanation of the various and different theories concerning the upcoming of ethnic identitiy. Is personal identity part of an ethnic identity, is the organsational form of groups always based on ethnicity?, Attempts we made in sociological, psychological, essentiallistic, sociobiologicalic and situationalistic - among others - ways to understand and explain the nature of ethnical formation. In the second part the author, former lecturer of ethnology at the Free University of Berlin and scientific editor, examines the history and organisation of the Hurons and their descendants, considers the ways of different developments during forced migrations. Were the Hurons and their offspring ethnic groups or had they other ways of organising their world anew during their dislocations?.The author comes to surprising insights and evaluations of the dynamic changes in the profane and sacred world of the Hurons up to the present Century.
