Store Wars: The Battle for our High Street

I spoke three words to the check-out girl: 'no' and 'thank you.' She said: 'have a nice day.' James Hadley doesn't know the price of bread but much to his surprise, he finds himself an active member of an anti-supermarket brigade. Laura Hadley, his wife, has a very different view of supermarkets. But she would, wouldn't she? After all she's just been offered one million pounds to be the face of ShopAll, the biggest chain of supermarkets in the country. 'They're cutting my job on the till. I'm being replaced by a self scan check-out.' David Jones grows iceberg lettuce for Shopall supermarkets. He used to grow 14 varieties of lettuce but now they only pay him for icebergs. They'd be happy if he could produce a square one. Mandy is fighting for the survival of the local shop and with her brigade combatants will do just about anything non-violent to bring about the downfall of her enemy: Shopall and all the other supermarkets. Occasionally things go wrong, seriously wrong. 'I can't afford to sell my milk to Shopall, but what can you do, they've cornered the market.' In this gripping story - never far from reality - a group of ordinary people take on the might of the supermarkets prepared to use increasingly desperate methods, including spying, hacking, hostage taking, robbery and murder. Thrown together our characters have to forget past ideas as they discover what trust, love and anger can do when change seems an impossible dream.
