Sherry Smiles-My New Name: Escaping from Mother's Demons

Sherry Smiles will now be my name at my new school. Mom and I must still hide from our pursuers. Now, it will be more difficult to catch us as Mom, too, has changed her name. I stumble along the asphalt and gravel roads towards the main road. It is dark and I am frightened. The air is fresh, cold and the darkness is all encompassing. I find the main road and wait for the public bus to my 6th grade class in Kettering, Ohio. The cold and dark are oppressive. My large, ratty, raccoon coat is heavy. At last a light haze peeks over the road on the nearby hill. A bus with the Xenia banner slows down in the road. Now, I am safely off the dark road and on my way to the Seventh Day Adventist School. I wish we were safe and didn't have to run all the time. This is my 4th home and 3rd school in a year (1965). "Isabel, I feel lost when I don't hear from you...are you still interested in chicken-raising and beekeeping?" (Isamu Noguchi) A young child and her mother evade their pursuers by changing names and places.The Mother is a childhood friend of the Artist Isamu Noguchi.
