One of the biggest challenges with high school seniors in the United States is that of low writing proficiency upon graduation. These seniors are entering into either higher academia settings or the work force with weak writing skills. It is in this light that this research aims to examine the root cause for the weakness in writing and find possible strategies that can be utilized at the elementary school level in order for writing proficiency levels to increase. By identifying early on in a student's learning career, not only can help students improve in their writing skills but also aim to promote more concrete ideas and writing attributes. By integrating and improving more skills into writing at an early age such as reading, listening, and speaking will also produce higher level thinking and knowledge and better prepare high school graduates for the writing skills needed to be successful.
