Having discovered a medicinal way to end aging and remember human beings immortal, Dr. Roger Manwell has a crisis of conscience about what immortality might do to the beliefs and faiths of humanity. On the eve before his demonstration for this 'cure for death, ' he encounters a stranger in home whom he believes to be the Devil, who proceeds to tempt him to go through with his demonstration and liberate humanity from the dictates of God and nature. The Dream of the Louse is a mixture of philosophical dialogue, psychological insight, and is scattered with vignettes, poetry, and flights of operatic fantasy. As a work of fiction, while not fully realized, it is nonetheless effective and some of its more brutal passages, as well as its most lovely, linger long after the final page.
