This spiritual experience coincided with his study of Sufism, an ancient, mystical branch of Islam, most popularized by Rumi.

During the months that followed, he threw himself into mysticism, seeking to wed his deeply held Catholic Christianity with elements of this ancient mystical practice of Islam, a practice that usually takes the form of poetry and stories.
