BASED ON A TRUE STORY 'don't be afraid to be afraid' Maria isn't a average 13 year old girl. She doesn't realise that craves something much deeper. Patricia is now rarely at home - leaving Maria under her 16 year old brothers protection as she travels from city to city, country to country -selling houses. Patricia has no idea what really goes on in the life of her kids with her son Samuel who is a gang member currently seeking to avenge the death of his friend and her 13 year old daughter longing to be loved. Maria has a crush on Derren who she feels she is in love with. Derren pays no attention to her so Maria looks to get his attention somehow. As part of Patricia's job she helps a family get a house. This family becomes very close to Patricia's. Maybe a little too close. Coincidently the other family have a son called Mikey. When Samuel makes friends with Mikey - Maria gets closer to Mikey in a way she no longer feels she can control, not knowing the dark secrets about Mikey that not even Samuel knows. Mikey knows it's wrong but he can't help the fact that he is in love with his friends sister, Maria. Not only his friends sister but a close family friend. Mikey starts to understand that Samuel - Maria's brother is a very dangerous boy on the streets but he just can't leave Maria despite obvious reasons as well as hidden reasons why they can't be together. Maria's plans to use Mikey in order to get derren's attention backfires on her as she gets closer to Mikey who teaches Maria about love, loss, life and death to a level beyond her understanding. Mikey and Marias love soon becomes dangerous and it's soon not only between them. It's Between families. Between friends. Between streets. Between lovers.
