On a planet that has a parallel history to Earth, Len, Harri and Doctor Josef have created a time machine with the goal of investigating history's mysteries. However, a disease that renders most of the people on the planet infertile, causes Doctor Josef to change his plans. His tragic actions place Len and Harri in danger especially from Officer Daw, who refuses to believe that they are innocent and vows to bring them to justice. Len and Harri decide to concentrate on a mystery from the past, they choose to find the identity of Ivan the Slicer, who viciously killed five women in 3888. During this search, Len and Harri make a discovery that they decide to use to help the infertile couples. They begin to operate the Adoptions in Time Agency. Their agency is successful at finding babies -- a lot of babies. This brings them under the scrutiny of Officer Daw. Because she finds so many babies, Officer Daw thinks that she is paying the Fertiles to have babies for her agency, which is forbidden by the extended anti-slavery laws. She's not. But the truth of where the babies come from is a potential nightmare. In their effort to defend themselves, Len and Harri find out who the terrorists are behind the devastating disease. Their discovery rocks Harri's world and puts them again at risk of being killed by people who should have been their protectors. They begin to operate the Adoptions in Time Agency.
