Laura Brighton seemed to have it all; a successful career as a New York attorney, a wonderful, loving husband and two beautiful daughters. Then one night she has a horrible nightmare where she witnesses the brutal rape and murder of a fourteen year old girl. As months go by, Laura can't seem to shake this vivid nightmare. She is so upset that she ends up driving on Columbus Day weekend, with her daughter Amanda, to a small Connecticut town called Winchester, where she believes this horrific crime took place. When they arrive in this quaint town, Laura learns that the people of Winchester are harboring some old secrets. Laura's first stop is the town's library where she hopes to find a newspaper article published four decades ago. Unfortunately, the librarian informs Laura that the original library burned down in 1975, along with all of its archives. She then suggested that Laura should pay a visit upon a Mr. George Taft, the town historian, who has lived here for over eighty years. Laura takes the librarians advice, jots down his address and then she and Amanda head over to Mr. Taft's house. When they arrive, they are greeted by an old, gray-haired man with glasses and a cane who they presume to be Mr. Taft. After they become acquainted, Mr. Taft in fact confirms that there was a murder of a fourteen year old girl named Amy Caldwell in October of 1964. Laura becomes convinced that she was the girl who was murdered in her dream. Laura thinks she is Amy Caldwell. Laura sets out to find her killer from forty years ago and put this nightmare to rest. Unfortunately the townspeople of Winchester want to put her to rest.
